LANDMARK FIRST COLLABORATION

DJ Maphorisa, Wizkid and DJ Tunez join forces for “SOUTH GIDI” – a blazing 3- track pack bridging Amapiano and Afrobeats on the world stage. Released as a surprise on October 24th, the project is led by the chart-topping viral single “MONEY CONSTANT” feat. Mavo.

“SOUTH GIDI”’s arrival pushed excitement to standout levels across clubs, streets and socials, becoming one of the most- discussed topics with thousands of reaction videos, and quickly turning into a cultural phenomenon.

“MONEY CONSTANT” which already surpassed 10 million audio streams, instantly took off online – inspiring over 400,000 creations and 500 million views on TikTok in just a few days, led by its viral signature dance.

The hottest new track in Nigeria, it raced to #1 on Spotify and has also held the #1 spot on Apple Music since release, while charting in 24 other countries.
It also made a strong debut on the official single charts – entering at #5 on the Nigerian Turntable chart and #6 on the UK Official Afrobeats Chart.

With momentum spreading globally, the track has become the 6th most searched song on Shazam worldwide and is charting across 15 territories from Nigeria at #1, to the UK, Ireland, UAE and Canada.

“SOUTH GIDI” – whose title fuses “South” (South Africa) with “Gidi” (from Lagos’ nickname, Las Gidi) – is a striking link-up between Johannesburg and Lagos, Africa’s two biggest music powerhouses. It seamlessly captures the pulse of Amapiano and Afrobeats – Africa’s leading exports and most influential genres continuing to reshape today’s global sound.

Two of Africa’s most influential talents – South African pioneer and central architect of Amapiano’s rise DJ Maphorisa, and Nigerian Grammy-winning Afrobeats icon and trailblazer Wizkid – stand as leading figures at the forefront and the heartbeat of these genres. The long-time collaborators reunite alongside DJ Tunez – Wizkid’s highly respected official DJ and producer, who rounds out the powerful trio.

“SOUTH GIDI” carries a deep sense of culture, history and unity. With a friendship that traces back many years, Wizkid played a pivotal role in inspiring DJ Maphorisa’s embrace of the then- underground Amapiano. “He’s the one that really put me in the sound” – he shared with BBC here.

The release arrives exactly 10 years after the pair’s groundbreaking pan-African hit “Soweto Baby” in November 2015, followed by “Good Love” in 2016, and their creative synergy reflected in more landmark moments – from Wizkid’s “In My Bed” to Drake’s global hit “One Dance”, which features Wizkid and co-production credits from DJ Maphorisa. Together, they have delivered records and written stories that left a defining stamp on the evolution of African music – and this new chapter extends that legacy.

Offering a vivid experience, “SOUTH GIDI” is a set of vibrant bangers crafted with masterful production and vocals – blending electrifying, club-ready energy with soulful vibes, sincere narratives and a unifying spirit that embodies celebration and African glory.

“MONEY CONSTANT” is a bold anthem praising the rise from humble beginnings to achieving and living a life of consistent success – with Nigeria’s biggest rising star Mavo joining the stellar lineup.

The infectious “ABANGANI” explores the themes of friendship, love and relationships, layered with DJ Maphorisa’s rhythmic and conversational Zulu-English perspective on the balance of giving and receiving – performed under his Madumane vocalist stage name. Wizkid’s melodic finesse anchors the track with relatable vulnerability, while Amapiano’s iconic vocalist Daliwonga channels emotional confusion through his smooth, signature style.

“FIESTA” unfolds with a captivating 3-Step pulse – the fast-rising South African sound – diving into themes of love and emotional truth. Wizkid’s silky, floating vocals and rhythmic flow glide over DJ Maphorisa’s pulsing drums and hypnotic basslines. Prominent vocalist Zeh McGeba and producer Zaba bring their distinct South African flavour, enhancing the track’s groove, spiritual feel and dancefloor-ready edge.

More than a project, “SOUTH GIDI” is a meaningful body of work that carries sound and culture forward – a compelling celebration and experience that resonates across borders.

ABOUT DJ MAPHORISA

Widely regarded as a pioneer and driving force behind the rise of Amapiano, mastermind DJ, producer, vocalist, songwriter and performer DJ Maphorisa’s influence reaches across Africa and the world. With over 1.34 billion streams, he has delivered countless hits and stands as a visionary continuing to push musical boundaries and shape the sound of the continent and beyond. Born in Pretoria, the South African artist broke through with his 2013 chart- topping single “Y- Tjukutja”, South Africa’s biggest song that year, followed by his work on Mafikizolo’s “Khona”, which won Song of the Year at the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards.
His impact deepened over the years – from his 2016 run producing Kwesta’s hit “Ngud”, releasing the pan- African hit “Soweto Baby” featuring Wizkid and DJ Buckz, and contributing to Drake’s global smash “One Dance”, to his collaboration with Major Lazer on “Particula”.
Alongside long- time collaborator Kabza De Small, Maphorisa reshaped the soundscape as Scorpion Kings with their eponymous 2019 album, followed by “Piano Hub”, “Pretty Girls Love Amapiano”, “The Return of Scorpion Kings”, and the 25- track “Konka Mixtape: Sweet and Dust” in 2023 – establishing themselves as central architects of the Amapiano movement.

A talent nurturer to many artists, such as stars like Tyler ICU – with whom he released the joint EP and 2× Platinum single “Banyana” in 2021 – Maphorisa has remained a defining collaborator on multi- platinum, globe- trotting records such as “Mnike”, “Manzi Nte”, “Wishi Wishi”, “Biri Marung”, and many more.

As he continues to headline major stages worldwide, including Piano In The Park at Central Park in New York, London or Afro Nation, last summer he made history with “Scorpion Kings Live & Friends” – uniting 50,000 fans alongside Kabza De Small and prestigious guests at Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld Stadium, a record- breaking celebration of Amapiano’s unstoppable rise.

ABOUT WIZKID

Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known by his stage name Wizkid, began his career in music when he was just 11 years old in Lagos, Nigeria. His first record, Lil Prinz, was recorded in 2001 in collaboration with Glorious Five, a group consisting of Balogun and his friends from church. In 2006, he started pursuing music full- time, at first collaborating with various Nigerian pop acts including OJB Jezreel, Naeto C, and Banky W. By 2011, he was ready to record his debut studio album as a solo artist; Superstar was released via Empire Mates Entertainment to great critical and public acclaim across Africa, propelling him to stardom in his home country. In 2014, Wiz released his sophomore album titled Ayo, which had a multitude of guest appearances, including a spot from Femi Kuti, and it also featured Balogun’s global breakthrough track “Ojuelegba.” Not only did the single cement his status as one of Nigeria’s biggest pop acts, it was also picked up and remixed by Drake and Skepta, thrusting Wizkid into the international spotlight. In return, Wizkid appeared on Drake’s 2016 smash single “One Dance.” This was followed by his third LP, Sounds From the Other Side in 2017. Wizkid solidified himself as a millennial pioneer for African entertainment. As an ode to his hometown, Wizkid released his fourth full- length project titled Made in Lagos in 2020 with guest appearances from Burna Boy, Skepta, Damian Marley, H.E.R, Ella Mai, and more.
