Ella Mai is on the verge of global success… Hot on the heels of her critically acclaimed extended player, Time, which boasted the breakout single and video, “She Don’t” (featuring Ty Dolla Sign), the 22-year-old British songstress followed that up with Change, a stellar, five-song EP, produced exclusively by DJ Mustard and featuring the hit song “10,000 hours”. Ella has jumped right back into the fray with her third and most recent EP Ready.
“One day I had an epiphany,” she explains. “I was in the shower and Fetty Wap’s ‘679’ came on and I just started singing along and came up with my own version.” Ella Mai decided to record and post her interpretation of the hip-hop hit on Instagram for her then 500 followers. Little did she know the clip would go viral with the help of her friends — and an unexpected repost by The Shade Room — bringing hundreds of thousands of admirers from all over the world to her virtual yard. It was then West Coast hip-hop producer, DJ Mustard (YG, Ty Dolla Sign,
2 Chainz, Tyga) hollered, in June of 2015.
After transplanting to LA on a full-time basis, Ella Mai officially signed to 10 Summers Records and released a second EP Change, which she describes as a continuum of her previous offering. Now back with her third EP entitled Ready, Ella Mai delivers the same styles of swift, sassy yet heartfelt vocals over 6 different tracks. Never falling short when it comes to displaying her personality in its most raw form, this Ready EP opens with “Boo’ed Up” an emotional 90’s R&B style piece, describing emotions of intense love and attraction. The entire EP is set in the tone of new love and fierce feelings but her feisty fire shows itself on “My Way”.
The self-styled role model wants young girls, especially, to feel empowered by her music. “Even if you’re in the process of finding yourself, it’s important to know what you stand for,” declares Ella Mai. “My message is one that can touch a lot of people.” A London girl, American dreaming. This is Ella Mai.
